Obama’s first visit to the Netherlands has been truly gezellig.

President Obama spoke another Dutch word today. This happened during the closing press conference of the Nuclear Security Summit.

Obama praised the Netherlands and Prime Minister Mark Rutte for the extraordinary work that has been done in helping to organize the summit. He thanked King Willem-Alexander and the people of the Netherlands for their remarkable hospitality and that the organization has been flawless. Obama also thanked all the people who were involved in putting everything together, including those who were putting up with the traffic that he caused.

Obama said: I’m told there’s a Dutch word that captures this spirit, which doesn’t translate exactly into English.  But let me say that my first visit to the Netherlands has been truly gezellig.

Obama convened the first Nuclear Security Summit in Washington four years ago because he believed that we need a serious and sustained global effort to deal with one of the greatest threats to international security — and that’s the specter of nuclear terrorism. Obama said that they have made further progress at their third summit in the Netherlands.
